Female Malard, anas pltyrhynchos

Mallard, anas pltyrhynchos

A male Mallard, you can clearly see the distinguishing little curled tail feather. he does look like a cross between a Pacific Black and a Mallard.

  1. The first photo is a favorite! What a funny expression. Looks like a cartoon character :D
As for the second photo I can never tell whether it's eclipse plumage, a cross or just a young in-between color changes. Very hard. + there are other domestic ducks that cross-breed with these too. Very hard to ID.

  2. I know, I'm not entirely sure about these ducks. I would love to do a study on these birds social activities.
