The regal Kelp Gull

These photo's were taken at Constitution Dock, Hobart.
I was able to walk quite close up to him. He allowed me to take several shots before he bowed his head and flew off.
Looking at these photo's closely back home on the computer I was so amazed at this birds powerful beak. It was all scratched and chipped, I kept thinking about the amazing life this bird must have on the open sea, what stories he must have!
I wonder how you can tell the age of these birds and their sex?

    Love the detail that's visible on the second shot.
    It's amazing how he let you get quite close. It never happens to me with these guys.
    Sorry to disappoint you, but this is actually a Kelp Gull. :D Pacific have even tougher and bigger beaks.
